When maximum cleaning capacity is required, MERV 15 rating for furnace filters is the only option preferable. They eliminate 99.99% of pollutants from air making it absolutely clean & safe. Such units are typically installed in surgery rooms, production facilities.
About Rating system (MERV)
Rating defines the size of particles trapped, e.g. filtering efficiency. For instance, MERV 1-3 models will eliminate less than 20% of large pollutants (3-10 microns) like dust, fibers, pollen. More efficient models with MERV 5-8 trap around 20-85% large pollutants, including cement dust, spores of mold, hairstyle spray. Higher-rated units eliminate smaller particles, including auto fume, milled flour, smells, tobacco smoke.
First options are cheap: they’re preferred for basic filtration. In houses with small kids, pets, allergic people, more efficient models are installed.
MERV 15 Filter Specifications
Such model is capable of eliminating about 90% of all kinds of particles, even tiniest ones like paint pigments, insecticides, powders, smoke, etc. MERV-15 models are not equally suitable for all conditioners: only heavy-duty units have enough sucking power to push air flow through media (about 500 fpm). They are not installed in regular residential conditioner due to decreasing service life of devices.
Various sizes are available with 24” x 24” being the most widespread option. Media is made of synthetic & natural fibers that trap and magnetize pollutants: most often, manufacturers use micro fiberglass. Header is made of high-impact plastic. Depending on air quality and conditioner capacity, MERV 15 furnace filter should be replaced once in 6-12 months. This is a more long-lasting option than cheaper alternatives.
- Size: custom (24” x 24”, 20” x 25”, 16” x 20” and many other options available);
- Filtration capacity: traps up to 95% particles of 0.3-1 microns;
- Material: Wet Laid Micro Fiberglass;
- Temperature range: up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
Other technical specifications depend on model chosen. It’s highly important to figure out an appropriate filter variant. Make sure there are no gaps between frame and conditioner chamber. Otherwise, particles will penetrate construction and reaching hospital-grade cleanliness will be impossible.
